Even before the Nintendo Switch officially released, we began hearing rumors of a fabled online service that would be required for some multiplayer games. Well, the rumors have become official, as Nintendo recently announced a September release for their paid online service. It will provide “access to online play in compatible games, a selection of NES games, extra features for the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app, and more”, for a few dollars per month.
Nintendo’s paid service is definitely something new for the company and its fans. While significantly cheaper than Playstation Plus or Xbox Live memberships, providing multiplayer as a service will surely stir up some trouble. Granted, it seems like Nintendo is offering a fair pricing scheme and enough extra features to make it relatively worthwhile. They are likely quite aware of the fine line that’s being walked here.
The highlight of this service is the inclusion of over 20 classic NES games fully remastered for the Switch. These titles will include multiplayer where applicable and serve as a replacement for the Virtual Console until further notice. The standard Switch titles that will immediately have their multiplayer permissions revoked are Splatoon 2, ARMS, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario Tennis Aces, and Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido. Cherish your free online privileges while you can, as we await the arrival of Nintendo Switch Online sometime next month.
A 12-month membership for Nintendo Switch Online can be purchased through Amazon, for $19.99 USD.
