Today, YouTube announced on the YouTube Creator Blog that they are introducing a new way to watch gaming-related videos on their platform. They will be retiring YouTube Gaming in March of 2019, less than six months from now. YouTube Gaming first launched on August 26th, 2015, bringing the platform’s lifespan to just over 3.5 years.
On YouTube’s left sidebar under the “More From YouTube” section is now a Gaming tab. When the user clicks into it, they will be led to the new home of gaming on YouTube. At first glance, this new page looks very similar to Twitch’s browse page, showing the most viewed games at the top. Although unlike Twitch, YouTube is making strides to help smaller content creators be noticed on the platform. A few scrolls down is a section they call “Gaming Creator on the Rise”. Every week YouTube will update this section with a new creator to help their content get exposure. However, this feature is currently only available in the United States with plans to roll it out to more countries over time.
